URGENT: The future of our Squash Section – Volunteers needed

Dear Members,

We are writing to you today with an urgent and honest update regarding the future of our squash section.

While our section is currently operating, we are living on borrowed time. The stark reality is that the remaining committee members are involved solely because of our connection to the junior section. Once those juniors move on or stop playing, there will be no committee left at all to run the club.

We cannot wait until we reach a complete breaking point to act—we desperately need members from across the wider squash section to step forward now.

Many hands make light work

We want to reassure everyone that with a full committee in place, the time commitment for each person is very manageable. You won't be expected to take on a massive burden alone.

While we have team members currently covering coaching and membership administration who would welcome support, key operational roles are currently completely vacant and unstaffed.

What is at stake?

If we cannot build a complete, balanced team, we will eventually have no choice but to hand the management of the squash section back to the main club.

Handing control back carries serious financial and practical risks for every player:

  • Introduction of Court Fees : Currently, court access is included within our membership with no per-session booking fees. If the main club takes over, they would be entirely free to introduce pay-per-play court fees on top of membership.
  • Higher Membership Fees : Overall membership rates could be increased to cover external management and administrative costs.
  • Loss of Autonomy & No Future Growth : We currently have no active leagues, teams, or social sessions running. Without a dedicated committee, we will lose all ability to rebuild these in the future, and if the main club determines the section is non-viable to manage, they may choose to discontinue squash altogether.

Roles & Support Needed

We are looking for members to step forward for the following roles:

  • Club Chair : Leads occasional meetings, sets overall direction, and acts as the main liaison for the section.
  • Secretary : Handles basic administration, records meeting notes, and manages key communications.
  • Finance / Treasurer : Oversees section funds, monitors income/expenses, and ensures financial stability.
  • Maintenance : Oversees basic court upkeep, lighting checks, and facility maintenance needs.
  • Club Welfare / Safeguarding Officer : Ensures child protection and safeguarding policies are followed, handles DBS compliance, and acts as the welfare contact for our junior section and governing body affiliation.
  • Social & Leagues Organiser : Helps organise social squash sessions, internal box leagues, or club events to bring energy and competition back to the section.
  • General Team Support : Extra hands to assist our existing coaching and membership teams.

You do not need prior committee experience—just a willingness to lend a hand. Roles can easily be shared, split, or adapted to fit your availability.

How to step forward

If you enjoy playing here and want to protect our current setup—keeping courts free of pay-per-play fees, getting social play and leagues back on the calendar, and ensuring the section stays open—please don't assume someone else will step up. A small contribution of your time will make a massive difference.

Please reach out to us at admin@kingfishersquashclub.co.uk or speak to a current committee member at the courts to discuss how you can help.

Thank you for your prompt support at this critical moment for our club.

Sincerely,

The Squash Committee
